Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Hiyoriyama Park is a park on a small hill in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture, and is known as a great viewing spot with views of Sakata Port, the brackish waters, and Mount Chokai in the distance. The name "Hiyoriyama" comes from the fact that it was once used as a place by sailors and fishermen heading out to the port to gauge the weather. The park is home to an observation deck, walking paths, and seasonal trees such as cherry blossoms and azaleas, making it a popular spot for strolling, photography, and appreciating the sunset and sunrise views.

Highlights

  • Observation deck: You can see the whole view of Sakata Port, ships coming in and out of the port, Mt. Chokai in the distance, and the Sea of Japan. The sunset and night view are especially beautiful.
  • Cherry blossoms and seasonal flowers: You can enjoy the scenery of each season, such as cherry blossoms in spring, azaleas in early summer, and autumn leaves in autumn. It is also a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing.
  • Historical background: This is a place with a local origin, as a place where sailors used to watch the weather (there may be an explanatory board in the park).
  • Walking trails and benches: There are plenty of places to sit and enjoy the views, take photos, and have a picnic.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Uetsu Main Line, Sakata Station (Sakata Station is the nearest main station).
  • Public Transportation: A convenient way to get there is by taxi from Sakata Station. If there are local buses or sightseeing buses in operation, you can get off at the bus stop near the port or in the city and walk to the area (please check the operating status in advance).
  • Walking: It is possible to walk from Sakata Station (approximately 20-30 minutes), but there are some slopes, so if you are not confident in your walking ability, we recommend taking a taxi.
  • By car: Accessible from national and city roads. Parking spaces are limited, so it's recommended to arrive early during peak tourist season.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short-term viewing: 30 minutes to 1 hour (if only looking at the view).
  • Leisurely strolling and photography: 1 to 2 hours (including strolling around the park, resting, and photography).
  • Cherry blossom viewing and picnics: 2 hours or more (depending on seasonal crowds and group activities).

Nearby spots

  • Sakata Port Area: The area offers unique port town scenery, warehouses, and walking paths along the sea. There are also many spots for sunset views.
  • Tourist facilities in the city: Historical buildings, art museums, local museums, etc. are scattered throughout the center of Sakata City (historic sites such as the Homma family home and local museums, etc.).
  • Restaurants and souvenir shops: There are restaurants and souvenir shops in the city that sell seafood from the port town. You can enjoy seafood dishes and local specialties.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: Visitors increase during cherry blossom season, holidays, and at dusk. Parking lots and observation areas can get crowded, so if you want to avoid crowds, consider visiting early in the morning or on a weekday.
  • Footing and safety: There are slopes and stairs in some areas of the park. Please wear comfortable shoes and keep an eye on your children.
  • Weather: As it is close to the sea and port, there are windy days. It is best to dress warmly and take measures against the wind to stay comfortable. However, caution is required in winter as there is a risk of snow accumulation and freezing.
  • Manners: Please be sure to take your trash with you and enjoy the scenery quietly so as not to disturb other visitors. Please note that the use of drones and fires may be prohibited or restricted, so please check in advance.
  • Check facility information: Opening hours, parking availability, event schedules, etc. may change. Please check the city's tourist information center or local information boards for the latest information.
