Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Tado Taisha Shrine is an ancient shrine located in Tado, Kuwana City, Mie Prefecture, and has long been revered as the main shrine for the region. The grounds are quiet and densely wooded, and the calm atmosphere created by the approach, stone steps, and old shrine buildings is what makes it so appealing. Particularly famous is the Ageuma Shinji ritual, held every year in early May, in which young people gallop up a steep slope on horseback, a brave ritual that has attracted attention nationwide. The shrine is also a popular place of worship for local people, who come to pray, ward off evil spirits, and for safe childbirth.

Highlights

  • Ageuma Shinto Ritual (early May every year) - A heroic ritual in which horses gallop up a sandy slope. It's impressive to see up close (the date changes every year, so be sure to check in advance).
  • Main hall and worship hall – A tranquil shrine surrounded by old trees. You can worship by following the prayer procedure (chozu → worship → omamori).
  • Approach and stone steps – The charming approach and stone steps are perfect for a stroll and offer many photo opportunities.
  • Hiking Mount Tado – There is a trailhead to Mount Tado near the temple grounds, offering easy hiking and great views.
  • Seasonal Expressions – Enjoy different expressions with each season, such as fresh greenery and autumn leaves.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Walking: About 10-15 minutes on foot from Tado Station on the Yoro Railway (one of the nearest stations).
  • Train + Bus/Taxi: Approximately 15-25 minutes by local bus or taxi from JR or Kintetsu Kuwana Station. Special buses may be available during events.
  • By car: Access from the Nagoya area on the Tomei-Meihan Expressway, or by car from nearby interchanges, takes about 20 to 30 minutes (depending on road conditions). There is a parking lot for visitors around the temple grounds, but it can get crowded and restricted during festivals, so it is recommended to use public transportation.
  • Note: On days of major events such as the Ageuma Shinto ritual, there may be traffic restrictions and special shuttles, so please check official information and Kuwana City guidelines in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Regular visit: 30-60 minutes (including strolling around the grounds, visiting the temple, and purchasing an amulet)
  • If hiking Mt. Tado is included: Half a day to a full day (depending on the course)
  • Viewing the Ageuma Shinto Ceremony: It is recommended to plan for at least half a day to watch, including the time of the event and waiting time (when it is crowded, it may take time to find a seat and move around).

Nearby spots

  • Mt. Tado (mountain climbing/hiking) - Enjoy nature walks and views.
  • Nabana no Sato (Illumination and Flower Theme Park) - Approximately 20-30 minutes by car, this park is popular for its seasonal flowers and night illuminations.
  • Nagashima Spa Land/Nagashima Onsen (Amusement park/Hot springs) - A popular leisure facility that serves as a base for tourists.
  • Kuwana-juku area (historical walks) - There are many places to explore, such as castle ruins and old townscapes.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: On festival days, such as the Ageuma Shinto ritual, the area can be extremely crowded. We recommend using public transportation and arriving early. There may be entrance restrictions and paid seating in viewing areas.
  • Manners: Shrines are places of worship. Please remain quiet within the grounds and observe proper etiquette (washing your hands, bowing twice, clapping twice, bowing once, etc.). Please follow the instructions of the priests and signs.
  • Photography: Generally, photography is permitted within the temple grounds, but there may be restrictions or a ban on photography during festivals and ceremonies. Please be considerate to other worshippers when taking photos.
  • Clothing and walking comfort: As there are approach paths and stone steps, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes. If you are going to Mt. Tado, please bring appropriate clothing and drinks for hiking.
  • Seasonal precautions: Take precautions against the heat in summer (drinking water and a hat), and against the cold in winter. Be careful when it rains as the ground can be slippery.

If necessary, we will provide you with more detailed and up-to-date information, such as public transportation timetables that are convenient for visiting the shrine, the schedule of events on the day (dates and viewing methods for the Ageuma Shinto ritual), and parking locations. Please let us know what information you need.
